My mother has ovarian cancer. She had fluid drained from her abdoman and it was sent for a pathology report. What is ascites and what causes it?
Thomas J. Herzog, MD:
Ascites is the fluid that accumulates in the abdominal cavity. It can be related to other causes, but in a patient with ovarian cancer it is usually from the tumor. It is usually sent for cytology to look for cancer cells under the microscope.
